Virginia Legislature Passes Home Inspection Legislation |

On Monday, February 22nd, the Virginia General Assembly overwhelmingly passed legislation creating a licensure system for professional home inspectors in the Commonwealth. Senate Bill 453, patroned by Sen. Bill Stanley, passed the House of Delegates on a 100-0 vote. The bill previously passed the state Senate 30-9. Governor Terry McAuliffe signed this bill into law on March 2, 2016. The bill allows any home inspector who is voluntarily certified to be automatically grandfathered into the licensure program as of July 1, 2017 and provides a transition period of approximately a year and a half for anyone not certified who will be required to have a license. RVAR's Governmental Affairs Committee and Board of Dierctors were among several who encouraged VAR to seek passage of this legislation. This bill was supported by many stakeholders in the real estate industry including home inspectors, Realtors, home builders and banks. |

Roanoke Region Offers Low Cost of Living |
|
Cost of living information is an important tool for individuals and businesses. It provides a baseline comparison for how far a dollar will go. And in the Roanoke Region, your dollar stretches further. Annual numbers released by the Council for Community and Economic Research for 2015 rank the Roanoke metro area as 58th lowest cost metro in the nation with costs lower than 75 percent of participating metros. With an index of 90, costs in Roanoke are 10 percent lower than the national average of 100. The numbers put Roanoke well below the national average for costs and ahead of similarly sized metro markets in the South such as Richmond (94.9), Asheville (97.5) and Chattanooga (95.1). New York City ranked highest in cost of living with an index more than twice the national average (227.4). The Cost of Living Index measures regional differences in the cost of housing, utilities, grocery items, transportation, health care and miscellaneous goods and services. DMV Announces Emergency Contact Program |

Virginia's Emergency Contact Program is a free public service which allows citizens to store emergency contact information. This program gives law enforcement a way to notify your family or friends in the event of a serious crash or other emergency that leaves you unable to communicate. Realtors are encouraged to sign up for this program! Cilck here to access the DMV site. If you already have a DMV account, simply click on "Emergency Contacts". If not, click on "create account". You wlll be prompted to enter two emergency contacts (you can change or modify your contacts at any time.) Your information will be securely stored by DMV and will be accessible only by law enforcement in the event of an emergency. |
